Church Bells

21st of August 1991. I slept on a hard marble floor in a high rise building half way up a steep street. I watched my friend on the bed naked with his arms outstretched making him looking like a renaissance sculpture from Florence. The sun was just shining through the open window lighting up the top of his forehead and at this moment the cathedral bells started ringing out echoing through the city streets maintaining a constant mystical persistent musical note like someone had kept their finger on an giant organ key. I thought the whole experience was wonderful, even if the floor was hard and I didn' sleep well. "Stephen, you made it! The bells stopped ringing just after 07:00 and the mystical organ like sound faded. Joe stirred and I could here all the neighbours opening their rolling shutters with a "clack clack clack" sound echoing all around. Saarbrücken was awake, and so was Joe. I had to call Claudia at her grandmother's house in Germany, she said "I will meet you at 12:00" "if I am not their, check every hour. I walked back and forth 13:00, no Claudia, 14:00.... I took a picture of the "Rathaus" on one of these journeys. Finally at 17:00 Claudia was waiting at the "Bahnhof" and threw her arms around me! Finally, she made it, yes that is how we did it back in the 1990s without any mobile phones!

Claudia and I finally met and made plans to travel into the heart of Germany.
