Asia Tour 2026 - Day 23/25 - 1st September - Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia - City 15/15 - Country 9/9

We went for a late breakfast. There was a toaster called "lekker" which I thought funny, but nothing like warm toast with melted butter. After breakfast we walked together to the post office. We bought and sent postcards there, after which we went to the much acclaimed "Mary and Martha's Gift Shop", it was totally overrated.

Then we went to the "State Department Store" which bore that name in English too. We browsed the clothing section looking at very expensive traditional clothes. In the end I bought three little bowls, gold, silver and bronze in colour.

Stanislav needed to access the internet, so we had a beer in the Belgian café. We parted ways and I went to the wonderful Gandan monastery. There were monks walking around in the traditional Buddhist robes among very decorative buildings. I bumped into an English guy with an American accent, we talked for ages. It turns out he was of Iranian heritage and his family moved from East Africa.

That was enough walking, so I went to Molly Malone's pub, which was about as Irish as Margaret Thatcher. The place was virtually empty but one English guy called Dominic walked in and we got chatting. He was from Blackpool and was now living full time in Ulaanbaatar.

I walked to the vegan restaurant, where Stanislav was already waiting. I ordered the spicy ramen noodles again and stir fried rice.

Our first attempt at going to bar "Dublin" wasn't successful as it was closed earlier, but this time I entered and ordered a local beer but could not finish it. We returned to the hotel where I had one vodka and went to bed early.
