Day 18 - Skopje - 19 September 2019

Burnt eggs
We had a nice long and fitful sleep. After a shower we went to the closely Irish pub called "St. Patrick's". I ordered an Irish breakfast minus the meat. Stanislav ordered a vegetable soup. My breakfast consisted of burnt eggs kidney beans and cold mushrooms. The cappuccino was also cold.

Alexander Veliki
After breakfast off we went to explore the city, first the new part with a huge kitch statue of Alexander Veliki. The old town was gorgeous, something along the lines of Sarajevo. There were a lot of small shops, some displaying Albanian flags. We even saw some Turkish speakers on the way, as they are a sizeable minority here. We saw a very nice mosque close to the city fortress, after which we went to a nice pivnica and I ordered a pint of local IPA and wrote some postcards.

Skopje
We returned to the city eventually finding the post office, actually this was just for admin so we had to go back to our shopping centre.

Bottle of wine
We paid a visit to Mother Theresa's house and stopped close by for a "green shake" and a coffee. Stanislav went to the hairdressers and I returned home changing into slightly warmer clothes, it was getting colder. I listened to "Lilli Marleen" with a glass for red wine, after which I returned to the St. Patrick. I asked "Imate li dobro Makedonsko pivo?" the reply was "Da, ili crveno ili belo?". I was confused so I ordered the belo (white). I actually received an entire bottle of wine!

Stanislav and soup!
Stanislav returned and we went outside. He ordered soup again and I got the tuna salad. Stanislav returned to the room after dinner and I went to explore the city. The heavens opened up! I stayed in St Patrick's for a beer. I left went the rain abated and tried to find one of the alleged gay bars, first this place with umbrellas which was empty, I walked by then 30 minutes on I was at a dead end.

New friends
I made my way back towards the Irish bar, and came across a street concert, so many people in the rain! I befriended some people from Leuven in the Irish bar. They had no idea about the recent history in the Balkans. One of the workers in the restaurant joined us and I treated everyone to a rakija. Time for bed!
