Thursday 25th August 2022 - თელავი

At 09:00 we went down for breakfast. At first it was just some small portions of Georgian bread and cheese, some salad and butter and and two eggs all neatly arranged for us. When we started eating, the server brought us porridge, and even chips! Everything was excellent!

Telavi fortress

After breakfast we continued onwards up to the old city through the old bazaar and finally the old fortress. After a quick visit to the fortress we went to the tourist information centre where I booked two trips to vineyards that same day and Stanislav booked an excursion for the following day.

Keti and her assistants and my new German friend Mark

Temo was the name of the driver and he brought us to Rtoni's vineyard run by Keti, who also knows Nino in Tbilisi and Mana in Purmerend. When I got there a German couple with a young child were already in the middle of preparing khachapuri and khinkali. While the dough was rising/settling we starting tasting wonderful wines starting with amber wine, then white and finally red wine.

Tasting wine in front of the vineyard

It was just about time to cook the khachapuri and I tasted, it was so wonderful and fresh with all the hot melted cheese oozing out of the centre. This was all just in front of the vines hanging behind us and a spectacular backdrop of the Caucasus mountains.

My wine tasting with Parna

We left Rtoni's winery and on the way to the next vineyard I had the feeling that my Georgian was getting better. I headed into a cellar where a young guy was only too happy to speak to me in English, but to his dismay I kept speaking Georgian. He disappeared and another guy Parna entered and we conducted the rest of the wine tasting in Georgian. We drank a lot! I returned to the city where I had some more glasses of wine and got talking to a deaf guy. I then returned to the hotel.
