I cannot do the Innsbruck-Verona journey justice here, and my prayers were also answered. As we approached the Italian border, it suddenly cleared up. Just like previous visits, I remember the rail trip snaking downhill with walls of mountains on either side of the carriage. The train seemed to struggle, making metallic screeching and scraping sounds as it twisted along the track. The Alpine-style houses surrounded by apple trees gave way to Italian-style villas and vineyards.

Five hours after leaving Innsbruck, we arrived in Padova, just as the sky opened up. I tried to follow the familiar route, but between roadworks and flooding, it was impossible. It was like "acqua alta" that you would see in Venezia. Some people took off their shoes, but one Indian tourist just waded through nonchalantly, dragging his suitcase through the water!

I picked up my key at Via Porciglia and dragged my now quite damaged suitcase across the cobblestones, making a loud noise as it moved along, getting me lots of attention. The apartment was a bit cold and bare, white and not welcoming at all.

I showered and went to a pizzeria close to Piazza delle Erbe. I had a proper pizza and also Insalata Caprese. The mozzarella and pesto were wonderful, but the tomatoes were a bit meh. Early to bed for me, as I had not slept in 36 hours.
