Early morning
Early morning

There was the small matter of practicalities: I had to put on a load of washing in the morning after a breakfast of bread and ajvar.

I stood outside, and my friend Nenad picked me up at 12:00. We stopped off at the Petrovaradin Fortress, where we had some coffee before the drive to Temerin.

Novi Sad is the largest city in Vojvodina, the northern part of Serbia, with a significant number of Hungarian speakers, Temerin having a 30% share of Hungarian speakers. Nenad is a Serb, and he was explaining how quite a few people in Temerin don't speak any Serbian at all. On the drive there, the place started to have a different feel.

We pulled up to the house and his mother and sister were waiting for us along with the two sausage dogs.

We started straight into the homemade rakija made from quince (dunja), which I have declared my favorite now. We chatted for a bit, I got a tour of the house, and then stopped for dinner of vermicelli soup and also potatoes and carrots and plenty of bread.

His garden was more like a mini farm, with all kinds of fruit trees, and that is how the beloved rakija is made. I was also gifted with a bottle made by one of his neighbours.
