I rose at 08:00 and went down to a large round table where Max the Syrian American and some others were already seated. I helped myself to some Czech anti-hangover garlic soup - highly recommended! Then the usual scrambled eggs and fried mixed vegetables and various cheeses and breads.

I went back to my room to rest a bit before packing up and going to the reception where young Max and Syrian Max still had their language badges on, we just hung around the lobby reluctant to leave but eventually I decided it was time and ordered a "Bolt" where the Polish lady that I met in Teresin in 2023 was along with an American girl who lived in Paris. They were very happy as otherwise they would have missed their buses. Our kind Ukrainian driver actually dropped them off at the bus station, the I go off at the railways station.

I was feeling sad already when I realised that then station was full of "us" and we started to group together. We were all heading to Vienna, so we just waited patiently for "Wien" to appear on then screens. Finally it was displayed as "1" and we all mobilised to the first platform, which actually read "3" so we all crossed to the tracks being blindly followed by some other people when a train BLASTED its horn and they all just froze on the tracks. It turned out we ere wrong and we all went back down under the tracks and back to "3" which was actually "1". We miraculously found carriage together.

Okay, now it was really goodbye, Raoul and Rogier were going to the airport to fly to Schiphol and Tommy and the Chinese guy were headed to their AirBnB. It retrospect, I should have stayed an extra night in Vienna as it turned out.

The luggage lockers were one floor below, and as the system failed nobody could either submit or retrieve their bags. There were a lot of irate people, including a man from New Zealand who had missed his train to Salzburg. People were phoning and e-mailing but nobody wanted to help.

I resigned myself to the next few hours around the station, but walked outside to find L'Osteria and wonderful Italian restaurant where I quickly switched from German to Italian. I started with a lovely avocado salad, and then a huge pizza Quattro Formaggi. I didn't feel like alcohol so I had two litres of san Pellegrino.

I spent two hours in the Italian restaurant, but transferred back to the railway station and waited for my train to be displayed. It was nice so see Bucharest, Kyiv and Rome being displayed, but we did have a two hour delay!

Eventually everyone was delighted when the citynightjet arrived and I found my place next to a couple from Purmerend. They kindly offered me some snacks in a wonderfully organised plastic box.
