Day 4 - Turin to Padua - 05 September 2019

Late Breakfast

I had a good sleep in so I packed up everything and left at around 12:00. In the station I had a "brioche" an orange juice and a cappuccino. I had a brief conversation in Italian with the Barista, the fact that a) is was too early to have breakfast and b) cappuccino è vietato dopo le 11:00. He explained that all is possible now. Having read some of my book "The Cut Out Girl" I then waited for the platform for my train to be assigned.

La Freccia Rossa - High speed train

About 15-20 before the departure we were assigned to binario 10, where my "freccia rossa" was waiting. It was pretty much empty until we go to Milano where it filled up. The train changed directions so now the mountains were on the wrong side. Then the emotions starting, I was imagining life as it could have been for me in Milano, I looked at all of the apartment locks and kept imagining what life could have been like.

The staircase at my accommodation

Finally I was arriving in Veneto. My accommodation texted me with information. Padova was as familiar as ever. I made my way to my accommodation where an old woman dressed in black was standing motionless at the top of the staircase in front of enormous wooden doors. She actually came down and took my very heavy suitcase! Having showed me my room, I go the bill - CASH ONLY. Still sweating, I went for cash, "aspetto voi" she said. This is archaic Italian from the south of Italy! Well, after I paid her I stupidly thought that I had given her too much, but it was actually in my wallet!

The old student house "Fusinato" now derelict

Afterwards I just had some bread and cheese that I brought from Torino, then I got showered and explored. I went to via Marzolo where my old student house was all boarded up. Not much else had changed in 27 years and I was choking on emotion. All those memories, ow 3 months could change you forever.

Wine at Caffè Cavour

I left the ghosts behind and ordered a wine in Caffè Cavour. It came with crisps and olives - excellent! I had another wine in Caffè Hednrix this time a Gerwürtraminer and after a short walk to the James Joyce Irish pub where I had an Italian IPA beer. I sat and contemplated my loss and how my life had changed. I finished my beer, and walked back and went to bed.

In a word: #emozioni
