The tour bus

After brekafast of eggs and toast, we stood outside in the cold at 09:30 to wait for our bus for the guided tour. The bus picked us up along with a few others, all English. We changed buses at the main bus station and we continued with Lasma our guide and driver across the frozen landscape.

Þingvellir where North America and Europe split

Our first stop was Þingvellir where the first Viking parliament used to be, and also where the North American and European tectonic plates are drifting apart. It was so bitterly cold.

Stokkur Geysir

The next stop was the Stokkur Geysir. When we arrived the entire area was bubbling with hot water and clouds rose from the ground. There were streams of hot water which were melthing surrounding ice, which in turn re-froze to create icicles. While filming the eruption of the Geysir, due to the high winds at -7C my right ear was in such pain I touched it only to realise that it was partially frozen. We then just took shelter in the visitor centre.

Gullfoss waterfall

Our final stop was Gullfoss waterfall, quite impressive as it was partially frozen. Here it seemed to be even colder than the Geysir area. We ran back to the visitor centre and I considered buying a hat only to see it was about 200 euros.....

We drove back across the frozen waste to our accomodation in Reykjavík. We had more bread and roggebrood and some chocolate egg. After our so called dinner, we headed out to have some drinks at the "Drunk Rabbit". I went a bit earlier, so I spoke to a couple from Waterford. When Stanislav arrived, we got talking to some men from Azerbaijan, I and tried to remember as much of that language as possible. A young drunk/stoned Icelandic guy stumlbled over to our table and as he didnt speak any English, I had to try to speak my very limited Icelandic.

Speaking Irish in Iceland

Soon after an Irishman from Conamara arrived, Gabriel from Spiddal. We ended up speaking Gaeilge together. Our time to leave came when an older man started drooling over our table.

Icelandic Song

We finally moved to the Danish bar when I bumped into one of the guys from a few nights ago. I bought him a beer. As it was live music, I asked him for a song in Icelandic, a song which everyone sang along with.
