Trabzon in the morning
Trabzon in the morning

In the morning, we both woke up suffering from the bad effects of the mold and stagnant water. I didn't even want to shower because it would create a swimming pool.

At 09:00, there was a knock on the door to tell us that breakfast was ready. I went upstairs to see a lady happily preparing two dishes containing bread, olives, boiled eggs, an omelette, tomatoes, and cucumber, and of course, tea as well. Stanislav didn't trust their hygiene, so I tried to eat his breakfast too.

After breakfast, we went to a place called 1453 to have proper coffee. I ordered a double Turkish coffee. It wasn't particularly nice; I was just doing it for the caffeine. We tried our best to find postcards, which didn't exist anywhere.

We had already been to the post office where Stanislav was ushered off upstairs for ages, just for stamps. We had a cappuccino in Le Shener's and realised that booking.com was blocked, so I had to use my roaming where I found us a new hotel room right next to the bus station.

I had the bright idea of printing off 4 copies of a photo and putting stamps on them to use as postcards, and as soon as I came up with the idea, we saw an actual photo shop right in front of us. The owner used to live in Germany and was happily speaking to us in German.

The castle
The castle

Happy with our creations, we walked to the old Greek castle. There were signs of Greek civilization everywhere, but they pretended as if this place was always Turkish. The castle was already a ruin, but my guess is that it will be knocked down in a bid to erase history.

Disappointed, we walked back to our substandard hotel. I posted the cards; even posting the cards was an unnecessary drama. We picked up our bags and checked out of the hotel. The guy seemed not too surprised and ordered us a taxi, which took ages...

We checked into our new hotel right across from the bus station. It was nice, shiny, and clean, unlike our first one.

We cleaned up using a proper shower, then had a meal of rice and beans at the station. Of course Stanislav had his lentil soup!

Armenian church

I had found the ruins of an Armenian church, so we hailed a taxi and drove to the top of the hill where it was standing, forgotten, misused, and unloved. On the internet, it was mentioned as having beautiful frescoes inside. The driver was pretty nonchalant about the whole thing and didn't care. He stopped a few times so I could perhaps take a picture of the city or of some mosques.

He dropped us off at a supermarket where we picked up some water and some nuts and walked back to our new hotel. The mosque was making its call to prayer as we decided to sleep early. We were tired of Trabzon and were looking forward to going to Georgia the next day.
